John wrote some fascinating books in his day. They are all out of print, so if you happen to see one in a used book store, pick it up. Here are a few of my favorites:

A Farewell to Farms

John had always romanticized the life of the farmer, until he tried it out himself. This book is about his real-life adventures trying, and failing, to make an honest living off the land.

For Whom the Horn Blows

After John gave up life on the farm, he decided that New York City was the place for him and he headed for the bright lights of the big city. John was a little overwhelmed by the pace there and this is his humorous story about his difficulties coping with the rushed lifestyle.

Nap in the Afternoon (published in Spanish under the title: Siesta)

John found his true passion during his extensive travels in Spain. He fell in love with the traditional afternoon siesta and clung tenaciously to the ritual throughout his life, which severely limited his employment opportunities. This book is an excellent travel log of John's Spanish adventures.
